William Wordsworth, in his famous poem ‘I wandered lonely as a cloud’ recalls coming upon ‘a host of golden daffodils’ and describes in the final stanza of the poem how enduringly uplifting the memory of them was for him;
For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.
While we might not have the opportunity of enjoying the sight of daffodils growing together in such quantities today, their presence is still something we look forward to each spring because of the special energies that they hold. The sight of their cheery yellow trumpets waving in the wind is like a ray of sunshine, uplifting to the spirits and harmonising to the mind.
